Memorial: Ellen Verleigh “Smitty” Smith, Blackburn, Schachtschneider passed away on Oct. 27, 2019, just after making sure the pumpkins got carved for Halloween this year. She was born in Carlton, Washington, on June 21, 1926, to Clara and Wid Smith. The family lived up Gold Creek. Verleigh went to Pateros High School, graduating in 1944.
Verleigh married Lyden Blackburn in 1945 and lived in Pateros and Twisp. They had six children. Lyden passed away in 1965. In 1969 she married Ed Schachtschneider and lived on Twisp-Carlton Road for 50 years.
Verleigh always grew a garden – raising a large family, she needed to. Later, she and Ed did it for the enjoyment and gave a lot of it away to friends and family.
Verleigh was game for anything, whether it was carving pumpkins, playing horseshoes or playing cards.
Verleigh belonged to the local Garden Club, raising many gladiolas and taking them to flower shows.
Verleigh was a member of the Twisp Women’s Bowling Association and was secretary of the association and three of the leagues. She ran many city tournaments, never tiring of it.
She was a longtime member and volunteer of the Twisp Senior Center and was a longtime board member there. She could always be seen at the desk on Monday afternoons and any other time that they needed her to fill in.
She was a 39-year member of the Methow Eagles Auxiliary, and she held the office of trustee for 15 years. She was the chairperson for the hunters’ chicken dinner for many years. She was always one to volunteer to help in the kitchen. Her husband, Ed, and she volunteered on Friday nights, cooking burgers for 15 years.
Verleigh’s hobbies are almost too many to name. She knitted, crocheted, did tatting, plastic canvas, embroidering, bead work, and leather work were some of them. Most people have a Christmas ornament or two that Verleigh has made.
She was preceded in death by her son David and son George; her parents; siblings Gerald, Dean, Burr, Wade, Wiley and Joseph Smith, Glenda Mahaffey, and Mardie Hough; and grandson Tyler Blackburn.
She is survived by her husband, Ed Schachtschneider, of Twisp; sons Charlie Blackburn of Twisp, Ernie Blackburn of Stanwood, Washington, Larry Blackburn of Clarkston, Washington, and daughter Della Cannon of Twisp; grandchildren Tina, Holly, Kaleb, Lyden, Callie, Leathy, Molly, Mitch, Kimberly and Geoff; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many special friends that know who you are.
A memorial service for Verleigh was Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Twisp Eagles Hall. Dinner potluck followed.
