Memorial: Longtime Methow Valley resident Lois Caroline Chavey passed away on Feb. 14, 2024. Lois was residing at Jamie’s Place Adult Family Home where she received love, companionship and tender care.
Lois was born to Signe and Lawrence Holm on Bainbridge Island, Washington, on April 6, 1933. She met her husband, Dick Chavey, in 1949 and moved to Elgin, Illinois, in 1955. During her 20 years in Elgin, Lois was very active in her community. She served on the Altar Society at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, volunteered at Little Angels, and was a loving foster parent to dozens of special needs children.
In 1975 Lois and her family moved to Twisp, where she again became very active in her community. Lois was a member of St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church, and volunteered her time and skills to many community organizations and events. Lois and her family hosted an annual Bike-a-Thon to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for many years.
Anyone who attended school in the Methow Valley School District from 1975-1998 will certainly remember Lois as the Lunch Lady who made homemade breads, soups and the famous Cheese Zombie, and provided students with friendly greetings and much love. Lois continued her advocacy for students and adults with disabilities in the Methow, volunteering her time in the Life Skills program at Methow Valley Elementary, and as a founding member of the Mentoring program.
When she retired from being the school cook, she spent time every week cooking and serving for The Cove in Twisp. Lois had a passion for giving to others. She will be remembered for her kindness, her vast network of friendships, her generosity and her homemade bread that made her instantly famous to anyone who tried it.
Lois is survived by her sister Jeanne Day and brother-in-law Howard Day, as well as her children, Theresa St. Hilaire (Patrick St. Hilaire), Monica Chavey, Keith Chavey (Patricia Chavey), Jeanne Morrow, Duane Chavey (Felis Chavey), Adrian Chavey (Gordon Reynaud) and her many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth Richard, her brothers, Larry Holm and Les Holm, and her parents, Signe and Lawrence Holm.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Jamie’s Place, St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church or The Cove.
Services were held at the Twisp Valley Grange on Sunday, Feb. 25, from 1-3 p.m.
