Memorial: Don was born Oct. 18, 1940, near Twisp. He died Dec. 21, 2022. He was a fantastic hunter, tracker and fisherman. Don kept our family fed with venison, salmon, and trout from our mountains, rivers and streams. His mother Berniece King promptly canned all for the long massive winter snowfalls, at that time in the Mazama area. Don went to Winthrop High School. He loved playing basketball. After the school bus left the upper reaches of Mazama, he would stay for basketball practice with no other means of transportation. Don would begin to walk the 14 miles to Mazama, making it to the Goudy Grade and at times a neighbor would pick him up. Don also liked playing baseball. In later years his family moved to Winthrop, then Twisp. He did not like leaving Mazama. Much later his family moved to Seattle to secure work. Don moved to Wenatchee , then to the Seattle area, and secured a supervisory position at the North Bend Washington Forest Service. In Seattle during the 1970s there were long gas lines at the stations. He was viciously attacked by a man with a chain and suffered a severe traumatic brain injury while defending his family. This injury was with him the rest of his life. Don was married to Carolyn Thomas for several years. He moved back to the Methow Valley in 1991. Don is survived by three sisters: Marlene (Jim )Shaw, Sharon Herring, Sharlene (Scott) Harrell; nieces Bonnie (Michael) Harvey, great nephew Jesse Buntain, great-great nephew David L. Buntain, great-great niece Blooklen, Shawna Bolten, Launa (Gideon) Sukal; nephews Casey, (Lori) Smith, great nephews Joe (Cherie) Smith, children Lily, Delaney, Jaymeson, Matt (Katie) child Oakley Smith, Rex (Jennifer) Shaw, great nephew Xander Shaw, whom Don loved getting his football and baseball pictures.
