Veteran: Bill attended the University of Washington as an ROTC member and spent summers between terms as the Slate Peak lookout for the U.S. Forest Service. After university and completion of military intelligence training, with a strong foundation in math and Russian history and language, he joined the United States Navy. He made it his career retiring at the rank of Captain.
During his career, he served as Vice Consul at Port Said, Egypt, and afterward returned to Washington, D.C., which became his base for assignments. There he married Christine Risgalla from Egypt. Tours of duty were spent in Japan and in Vietnam where he served on the Blue Ridge, the Amphibious Command Ship, during the evacuation of Saigon. Later he worked on assignment in Panama and as a Naval War College consultant in D.C.
